wiring questions volvo 151

Mechanic put in a 'new' harness but never finished the job. After reading posts here, I determined that he had connected wrong tan (actually brown) wire to temp sender. Figured this by grounding. Let me say that there are 2 brown wires coming out of harness together. Also 2 purple ones. So when I ground the 2nd brown wire, it kills the engine. Where should it connect? Same thing happens with the 2nd purple wire (first goes to coil). So I have a brown (tan?) and a purple that remain connected to nothing. Engine runs great (pertronix ignition), but I have no amp meter. fyi--oil pressure does work, and temp now works after I switched to the second brown wire. Tach doesn't work either, but 1 connector broke off--I am waiting for a new tach.
Can anyone suggest what I do with the 2nd brown and 2nd purple wires?

You are going to have to trace the wires back and see which terminals they come out of on the harness plug. Looks like #7 could have a purple and a brown wire coming out of it. Same with terminal 2.
Here is a wiring diagram from the service manual. You probably ought to get one from your dealer or someone if you plan on working on it. The Volvo PN for the manual is 7732007.
Here is the wiring diagram and the discription.
If you download the pictures to your computer you can blow them up to a usable size. I only have so much room on my FREE site and have to eliminate non used pictures. So don't expect these to be around forever.

Thanks, Don! There are some differences between this schematic and the one in my seloc manual. Yours looks to be more like it really is. I'll check it out and let you know how it goes.

That's why I NEVER recommend any of the aftermarket manuals.

Re: wiring questions volvo 151

Well, I'm back. The loose purple probably is supposed to connect to the distributor--I'm not sure exactly where. Also, I remember we had to run a separate wire from coil to distributor to make the pertronix work. I don't know why.
The brown wire should go to the alternator; however, I now have a 1 wirealternator. The in dash ammeter reads about 11 volts and it doesn't respond when I touch it to the connector on the alternator.

Re: wiring questions volvo 151

Do you actually have an Amp meter? or are you calling a volt meter an amp meter. There are both, and they measure completly different things. Amperage is not Voltage.
Did you measure the VOLTAGE coming out of the alternator on the Big Red Wire? That should be showing around 14.5 Volts when the engine is running about 1200 to 1500 rpm.
If the battery is low, and you haven't reved the engine up, it may not have triggered the regulator to kick in and start charging.
Forget the gauge on the instrument panel, do you have a DVM or an analog VOM and know how to use it for testing?

This evening I put the multitester on the back of the alternator. It consistently read 12 volts. Should it read more even if battery is fully charged?

Was the motor running when you did the test?

Re: wiring questions volvo 151

Baot wiring was standardized quite a few years ago.

Far as I know, these are the standards:

Black--------All Grounds

Black with Yellow stripe------Magneto/short to kill

Gray------------Tachometer signal

Yellow with Black stripe---------Choke

Red-----------Unprotected(12V+)from battery

Red with Purple stripe-----------Protected(+12V)from battery

Purple-------------(+12V)from ignition switch

Tan-----------Overheat sensor to warning horn

Pink-------------Sending unit to fuel guage

Yellow with Red stripe----Ignition switch to starter solenoid

Yellow-----------------charging stator to rectifier

Lt.Blue with White stripe--------Trim up

Green with White stripe-----------Trim down

Some standard colors for boats since 1980 are as follows:
· heavy red 10 guage (main battery)
· heavy black (main ground)
· purple (ignition)
· yellow (starter solonoid)
· grey (tachometer)
· brown (temperature)
· blue (oil pressure)
· brown with stripe (alarm)
Accesories
· pink (fuel sending unit)
· yellow (blower)
· brown (bilge pump)
· grey (navigation lights)
· heavy green (bonding wire)
· red (misc electrical add-ons , vhf , depth finder, stereo, radar, power supplies)

Re: wiring questions volvo 151

Well, Dunaruna, I had to laugh when I read your post. I may be challenged when I don't have a correct wiring schemeatic, but yes, engine was running. But what the hell, decided to test again, so I found way more than 12 volts (for awhile) where the yellow wire comes out of alternator (or is it in?), and 12 on the red. After warming up,it dropped back to around 12 on both. So I presume brown wire should connect at the yellow if I am to measure voltage.
And Chief, in prior wanderings here, I learned about something called the marine wiring code. Do a search for this on google, and it will show several sources from which a printout can be made.
Anyway guys, a warm mahalo (thanks!) for your interest and your help!

Re: wiring questions volvo 151

I may be missing something here gino, but if you have a 1 wire alternator, you shouldn't have anything attached to it other than the red wire from the B+ terminal on the alternator going to the starter 30 terminal(the main terminal with the battery cable.).
If you have a brown, or yellow or anything else attached to it, why ....... they call them 1 wire alternators, not "stick all the wires on one terminal alternators".

Okay, thanks again, Don. I haven't connected the brown wire and I won't. I was just wanting to get all of my gauges to function.

Re: wiring questions volvo 151

The gauges will work if you take the alternator clear off the engine. So basically, what you are saying is you are changing the alternator in hopes of making the gauges work???? If so, you are going about it all backwards.
To begin with you said "Gauges" Not just the Voltmeter gauge. Do all the gauges not work?
What is your real problem, not what you think the problem is. Do you have a gauge problem or an alternator problem. Are your batteries going down? What????

Re: wiring questions volvo 151

Engine runs fine. Alternator is relatively new and works. Oil pressure is only gauge that seems to work. Temperature gauge seems to 'stick'. I've checked the grounds, cleaned the connections, etc. Sometimes temp responds to a 'tap', sometimes no response. If I had oil and temp working, I wouldn't be too worried. My concern is not wanting to blow my engine when I'm out in the deep--all because something failed, and the gauges didn't warn me. I'm sure you can relate to that!
Like I said before, one connect broke off on tach when I tried to fix it, and when I was trying to make ground very tight on temp gauge, the whole thing turned (salt water, you know). Sounds like I need new gauges, and I'm waiting to receive a new temperature gauge soon.
