Under the engine covers
on my 1985 4cyl. 50hp. there is a 20amp. inline fuse in the large red wire that comes form the main connector,
to a splice, from the spilce 1 red wire goes to the starter solenoid and the other red wire goes to the rectifier.
The fuse is between the connector and the splice. If I remove this fuse will it disable the ignition system? I
want to check compression and don`t want to burn up another switch box............HAS

Re: Wiring question

Just remove all the plugs and put them back in the plug wires and wrap them all toghter with a wire around the threaded part and run the wire to a good grd. on the block. This will keep the switchbox and stater from any damage.

Re: Wiring question

HAS, Leave the ign key in the off position. Now use a small jumper wire to connect the battery side of the starter solenoid to the small starter solenoid with the yellow wire on it. The motor will crank, but there will be no spark.

This is a wifes tale.....it will not damage a box if wires are not grounded. If you want just pull the kill tether and crank with key or do as Chris suggests.

Thank you for the quick answers, I was not sure how to disable the ingition system and didn`t want damage anymore electrical
parts. I now have 1&1/2 hours on the engine on the hose at 800 to 1000rpm. I hope for some warmer weather so I can out on
the nanticoke river for the second part of the engine break in. so far,so good! ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU..........HAS

Re: Wiring question

Sorry to hijack this thread but I have a similar motor but the 3 cyl version. I also wanted to do a compression test soon and rather than messing around with alligator wires grounded and so on, I have a small switch on my Quicksilver control box marked IGN. So I assume that if I flick this to off, then i can crank the engine but not with any spark? Is this correct? If so that would be neat way of avoiding any potential problems? You would need to have this switch on your box though!
I was advised on another thread to buy a small remote starter to hook up to the solenoid. I have ordered one for a few ? and should be coming soon. Looks again to be a neat way to crank the engine from the solenoid itself rather than the box. Again I ASSUME (I'm a total novice) that you can hook one of these up, keep the key out of the ignition or unturned and it should crank with no spark, just as CHRIS1956 says above.
Thanks
Al

Re: Wiring question

Al, You can also jump the starter with auto jumper cables. There are lots of ways to crank the motor with the ign off. I use a single clip lead with an aligator clip on each end. it is the easiest and cheapest.

Thats what I did in the end Chris, worked perfect and not much sparking or anything. I can never quite jump it without jumping myself! The starter kicking in 1 foot from you never fails to raise your pulse rate!

Cheers
Al
