wiring question - toyota pickup to trailer

My Toyota pickup has separate directional and brake light bulbs with separate wires to each. The trailer's wiring plug has one wire for both. It's labeled "turn/stop".

I spliced into my truck's rear light assembly for leads to go to the 4-prong plug that mates with the trailer plug but what should I do about the separate directional and brake wires?

If I just connect them together to form one wire to go to the plug, I assume that would screw up the truck lights ie every time I step on the brake the directionals would come on and every time I put on a directional the brake lights would come on.

Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You need an adapter, Skiffer.

Any auto parts store, even Wal-Mart, has them.

Good luck. :)

skiffer,

JB is right, you need the adapter. I used to have a Toyota pickup and tried to hook the trailer lights in without one. All of the lights on the truck and trailer would flash when I turned on the turn signal  . Buy the adapter.

RCS

I agree. The adapter is really nothing but a relay. You hit the light(which ever one)and it energizes the relay sending power to to the boat lights in the correct fashion.
