Having probems getting my Mercury 25hp to start (even by pull starting). Knowing that the solonoid has something to do with the ignition, does anyone out there know which color wires go to which terminals.

Mine is wired as:
Yellow wire on Left "big post"

Black wire with red end, and a smaller red wire on Right "big post"

Small black wire on top-right "little post"

small red wire on bottom-right "little post"

When I turn the key on, the dash lights light up, but when I turn key to start position, I only get a "click". I replaced the solonoid, and got thew same results. I then put the old solonoid back on.

Just to save my own sanity, I want to make sure that I didn't screw up the wiring when I put it back together. I realize that I more than likely have a bad starter, but wanted to check the wiring first. Also, if I jumper the right "big post" with the right bottom "little post", the solonoid clicks (once, same as when I turn the key).

Do any of you know whether or not the sequence I've described sounds right?

Thanks,
Jim

hey kimberman...

disconnect the wire @ the starter that comes from the seloniod. then, get a set of jumper cables and run it from your truck battery (just to take the boat battery out of the equation). ground the black cable on the block and then touch the red to the starter. if it tries to start... you have a seloniod problem. if not...get a new starter.

p.s. make sure the key is not on!!!!

mason
