wiring is black _ leaf springs are awfully rusty

my conntinentel trailer is about four years old .the core of the wiring is black should I be concerned?<br />what point do I replace the springs?

myles45, the black is usually just a coating and nothing to worry about, if you need to make a connection and unless you want to replace the wire here's what I do, strip about 1/2 inch of the insulation from the wire and lay it flat, then scrape a single edge razor blade the length of the bare section of the wire as you rotate the wire, do this until you get it all nicely copper colored, at this point you can actually solder to it, I've done it many times. As far as the springs go, after 4 years they aren't likely rusted through, take a screw driver and scrape through the rust to bare metal, chances are the rust is just a coating, nothing to worry about.

I'm going to replace the springs on my tandem axle galvanized trailer after 10 years of use.<br /><br />A lot depends on how often you use it, if you dunk it (I do), how often you go after rust and how frequently you fresh water flush the trailer. I have been doing all of these things.
