myles45, the black is usually just a coating and nothing to worry about, if you need to make a connection and unless you want to replace the wire here's what I do, strip about 1/2 inch of the insulation from the wire and lay it flat, then scrape a single edge razor blade the length of the bare section of the wire as you rotate the wire, do this until you get it all nicely copper colored, at this point you can actually solder to it, I've done it many times. As far as the springs go, after 4 years they aren't likely rusted through, take a screw driver and scrape through the rust to bare metal, chances are the rust is just a coating, nothing to worry about.
