I recently picked up a Mariner 30E Serial number 689-407723. First problem is I cannot seem to figure out what year this engine was made, I think it is mid 80's but not sure.

Second issue is as soon as I turn the key to ignition on (not Cranking) it blows an in-line fuse that comes off the starter relay.

I think it might be the ignition switch but could really use some help finding a schematic for it.

Wire colors are as follows:

Kill Switch: Black White
Main Key Switch: 2 yellow (one goes to the choke),2 white(one comes from kill switch), 2Black (one comes from kill switch), 1 Pink, 1 Tan
Choke:1Blue, 1Yellow

Can Anybody help?

Re: Wiring help

Looks like the mariner section only goes up to 15HP engines.

Re: Wiring help

I now also think it was built by Yamaha. Made in Japan on serial tag.

Re: Wiring help

I've got an '82 30 HP and the Service Manual. If you can't find it on-line I can scan it and sent to you. Magneto or CD ignition (different schematics)?

Re: Wiring help

Wow I think I fixed it! the pink wire in the remote panel harness was plugged into a black wire I unplug it my fuse quits blowing and the engine started!

so now I wonder if it was supposed to be plugged into that and something else is wrong or did the guy that sold it to me have an issue and thought those were supposed to be connected? lol

Re: Wiring help

Interesting. On my schematic the pink wire doesn't connect to anything. Looked thru the entire manual and didn't see the pink wire mentioned at all. Not clear how grounding it would cause a problem - but, if it works now ........
