Hey guys I just picked up a project boat that has wiring problems. Several wires were burnt and spliced near the main plug. I believe I have correctly repaired the harness for testing purposes.

Several wires were connected in the wrong place by someone in the past. I have a copy of the wiring diagram and it is relatively simple to connect them.

Except, I have 2 smaller wires needing to go to the starter solenoid and I cannot tell which one goes where since I trust nothing else from the PO.

I don't think it matters on the heavy cables but the smaller ones may matter since one is + and the other is ground.

Any advice?

Also, I have the diamond shaped rectifier and I do not trust POs wiring to it either. I found the 2 wires coming down from the stator but where to they connect? Instinct says on the side with 2 terminals then the opposite side with 1 terminal gets the +12 to battery but I can't see any markings on it.

The starter solenoid should have a Large power wire going from harness to solenoid (positive), a smaller relay wire (yellow), a large wire going to starter (positive) and a ground.

There are 2 terminals sticking up from the starter solenoid. Which one gets black (ground) and which one gets yellow (Starter switch) ?

Rectifier is wired in.

OK another wiring problem. Got the harness installed and plugged it in. Since I trust nothing about this boat I check the battery leads before hooking up the battery. Ohms go to 0 when checking continuity.

I traced it back to the starter. When I check continuity from the + post on the starter to the frame I get 0. Fried starter?

That motor should have a battery cable from the case of the starter to the upper bolt on the cowling support. The starter is mounted in rubber, hence the need to ground it. You have the rectifier wired correctly? The rectifier case must be grounded.

rectifier is correct, no worries there.

I'm still iffy on the starter solenoid and why I seem to have continuity through the starter +12 post to ground

I would expect continuity thru the starter +12VDC connection to ground. Resistance should be real low as the starter will draw 100A or so. Not sure I understood your question.

I believe I got the wiring straightened out. Now I need to get gas flowing through the carbs
