Wiring harness connectors

I installed new wiring on my trailer 4 years ago. I used the supplied grease and end cover on the connector. Today I went out, and the lights did not work. I looked at the connector and see corrosion in there. I worked it around and got the light to work. This is the flat connector. Is there a better system? I am tired or replacing connectors. It is always at the worst time when it happens.

This is not a boat trailer and is not towed in winter when there is salt on the road.

Scoop

It sounds like your connectors become corroded after being exposed to the elements.

Do you or have you tried keeping the flat connectors (on truck and on trailer) covered when not in use? My 95 came with a rubber cap that slips over the truck-side connector snuggly enough to not fall off and keeps excess moisture out. I am looking for one for my trailer-side connector as well, and will even try using a truck-side connector with the wires cut off and a bit of electrical tape over it for effect (if I cannot find one that is made for this).

Keep-em greased up. You can find this stuff at any electronics store ie RadioShack ect. This grease is designed to conduct. I've never replaced a connector yet on either my camper, Atv trailer or Boat. Treat them just as you would your battery terminals on your vehicle.

SingleShot

I buy two connector kits, and keep the extra ends on the repective ends when not towing, they are cheap and it works well, I use a little white lithium to keep em lubed

I had them greased, but obviously not enough. I need to replace them now and grease them again. I do have covers on all of the connectors.

Thanks guys.

Go with castawayrays idea of the white grease with a cap on it. Being from Wisconsin, land of cheese and salt(in the winter), Ive spiced more trailer wires that were totally corroded (green and failing) that I care to mention. Got a F150 that came with trailer package (prewired) and if you use the grease and the cap, all that nasty salt can't get into the plug. 5 year old truck, no problem(and I tow a sled trailer in the winter) PDS

I use a shot of areosol "Liquid Wrench" about once a year - in the fall before the salt and crap get too bad. If it gets to "gaulded up" you can use a small straight-edge screwdriver or needle nose pliers to scrape or score the metal so it can make contact again. Be prepared to pop a fuse if you do this.
