Re: wiring diagram needed

Normally you have a neutral start switch in the remote control (gearshift/throttle) that the wire off the S terminal in your ignition switch goes through, if it's open (Not in neutral or defective) it won't start as the solenoid will not get energized, it has nothing to do with the coil, you may be confusing that with the shift interrupt switch?

ps...do you really have a 260 Merc with an OMC 800 drive on it??

Re: wiring diagram needed

the problem that im having is an intermitant spark loss at cruise and excel. all primary ign componants have been replaced (dist, coil wires ect) i think that somthing is just shutting off the power to the coil. could you give more info on the shift interrupt switch ? i think its a 260 maybe its 240 cant remember the decal put is deff a gm 350 5.7 engine

Re: wiring diagram needed

If you have a Merc here is a very simple layout of the switch, what it does is momentarily ground out the coil (kills ignition) while you shift out of gear into neutral, it makes the shifting a whole lot easier.

That diagram is for a Mercruiser. He has an OMC 800.

It is indeed a mechanical shift diagram...just the wrong one.

Did the 800 OMC have a shift interrupt circuit?

It won't be your neutral switch, that just disables your starter.

If you have a safety lanyard("man-overboard") switch, that could be your problem. Those are an inline switch in your ignition circuit.

Another thing could be your ignition switch itself. Next time you are out running your boat, wiggle the key slightly to see if you get the same problem.

If all of that doesn't work, may have to trace all the wiring too make sure all connections are good. Since it sounds like you did a repower, it is possible the person who did the swap messed up on a connector or splice possibly.

Re: wiring diagram needed

One more thing to try..

A bad tachometer can also cause this. Take the wire off the coil that goes to the tach and try running it.
