I recently acquired a 15 ft Star Trek-V boat and 1969 Model 40973R Evinrude outboard motor that had been left exposed to the elements for years. I cleaned the engine and discovered that the insulation on all of the wiring was so detiorated that the bare copper wire was exposed and the color of the wires could not be determined. I am badly in need of a full wiring diagram so that I can completely replace all of the wiring on the motor.

This is my first post on the forum. I am a new member to iBoats and it looks like it is going to be a great source for all kinds of boating information. Thanks for any any help you can provide.

Although I rarely recommend aftermarket books such as Chilton or Clymer, one thing they can sometimes be good for, is wiring diagrams.

The Clymer Evinrude/Johnson Outboard Shop Manual, 1.5 - 125 hp, 1956 - 1972 (Publication # B734), has what you are looking for. The diagram for the electric shift model is on page 359 and the one for the mechanical shift is on page 360. You can probably buy this manual right here at iboats. If not, your local OMC/BRP dealer will probably have it.

BTW - you "owe me" bigtime - I just pulled this manual out from under one of my computer monitors, where it has been elevating it to the level of the monitor next to it for several years! :p

Thanks for the information. I will definitely try to lacate a copy of the Clymer Evinrude/Johnson Outboard Shop Manual #374. It sounds like it is exactly what I will be needing.

I have the same motor, except it's a short shaft. When you say it needs to be rewired are you talking about the cable that goes up to the helm or what's under the cowling on the motor itself? I'm thinking the molded connector for the helm cable could be a problem if you tried to splice new wires close to it. You could eleminate it but it's nice to have if ever need to take the motor off the boat for whatever reason. Keep an eye on eBay ect for a harness, there are people parting these motors out. The factory repair manual has sweet wiring diagram, they are pretty easy to find on eBay also.

Be EXTREMELY carefull with the shift wires going to the lower unit!!! I bought a good used LU cheap except the wires were pulled out of the molded rubber portion of the cable. After I discovered it couldn't be fixed and still maintain the seal between the parts to keep the oil in and the water out I had to replace it. SeaWay marine in Seattle has them, for $150.00 EACH! If you need to repair upper portion of it it could be done with shrink tube and liquid tape. Make shure the wires don't short across each other, if they do it will engage forward AND reverse at the same time causing bad, expesive things to happen.

I am talking about all of the wiring on the motor side of the 10 pin round connector. Some of the wires are short and won't be difficult to replace but others are incorporated in sleeved or wrapped harness tupe routing and are so deteriorated that the insulation has completely crumbled. I still need to devise a way to handle the weight and balance of the motor when I try to trace the wiring. It is currently mounted in a vertical position on a regular moving dolly ( tied with woven straps) and is exteremely top heavy. Thanks for your input.

Jay Merrill,

Are you interested in selling your manual if it?s the one Mr. AJ Fairweather needs to rewire his motor (Model 40973R Evinrude 1969 40HP Outboard Motor)? If so, how can he contact you on this matter?

Thanks, JOW

PS. I personally understand your position below and respect it:

I get a lot of PMs, asking for advice on engine problems. Because answering questions in a PM prevents others from sharing in the discussion and learning from it, I would prefer not to receive PMs on these matters. Please post a thread or continue the discussion in an existing thread, so all can benefit from the information.

Re: Wiring Diagram for Model 40973R Evinrude 1969 40HP Outboard Motor

I finally was able to borrow a copy of the Clymer Evinrude/Johnson Shop Manual covering my Model 40973R outboard motor referenced in an earlier reply by Jay Merril. And just as he stated the schematic was there on page 359. I was able to borrow the manual from the Public Library in Chorpus Christi, TX through the Inter Library Loan system which I informed about by my my local librarian. I guess I am all set to begin replacing the bad wiring and will try to post some detailed photos as I make a little headway.

Thanks again Jay for telling me about the manual.

A.J.
