Re: wiring diagram for a '72
You don't need a diagram for that, you just need to put it together right. That wire ring is called a reverse cut-out ring. It's purpose is to prevent the motor from running backwards (yes it is perfectly capable of running backwards). You poked the prong of the contact down through the loop on the spring, didn't you? The motor thinks it is running backwards and shuts itself off.
The cut-out ring is supposed to float back and forth between the metal terminal and the nylon insulator, depending on which direction the shaft is turning. When running forward it is against the nylon and doesn't do a darn thing in there. But reverse the rotation and it goes up against the metal terminal and turns the motor off.
That cut-off ring should be lubricated very sparingly where it rides on the shaft with some extreme pressure (EP) grease.
Thank you for the reply. Looking at an exploded view I may have the spring washer in upside down. Will this cause a imediate problem?
I pulled the flywheel to check the stator and the points. These seemed good and had continuity through the stator coils.
I then started to check the amplifier. There is approx 12 volts in on the red wire coming in and the black/white wire going to the points. The third wire going to the coil has no reading. Should this be? or is the Amplifier bad? I sure hope not.
I am not sure how to check the coil either.
I would appreciate any help.
As for the wiring diagram I am needing one to make for certian that the shifter is wire correctly along with the wiring on the motor. This is a project and I wanted to rule out problems with wiring from the past owner. I have not had this motor running since I bought it.
