I have what i believe to be a 1971 50hp outboard (the serial number is 3099588 and going by this reference page http://www.storesonline.com/site/573683/page/609764 it should be a 1971? )

Anyway, All the wiring is pretty grim from age so I'm looking for a wiring diagram so i can rewire the motor.

Can anybody help me out ?

Thanks in advance !

Thanks Gerry, I searched on google but you know how it is, Thanks for the diagram it should be just what i need to replace all the rotted out wiring !

Is there any common problems with these motors that you know off ? I'm pretty green on these motors/boat motors in general but i am a apprentice mech by trade so i know what im doing in terms of actual fixing it.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

It is a 1971:

1500101 MERCURY 1971 50

Model 1500101 Parts, if you don't have them:

Have you seen these?

The 500 Thunderbolt will probably suit yours as the other two are later CD ignitions.

I have a '68 Merc 500 and to me it is bullet proof except for the wiring which I replaced. Everybody has different problems with every engine but a lot of the running ones I see are abuse or lack of maintenance.

It all starts with a good compression reading to give you a baseline of the engine condition, then you have a good idea of what is ahead of you.
Fuel system must be clean and older engines tend to suffer when they meet todays new ethanol fuels. I just replace all the lines without question unless the definitely look new. Pointless doing a carb rebuild only to have crap from the lines destroying your effort.

You can search this forum at the top right hand side for Merc 500 and read all you can. Get a good original service manual and not one of those crap Clymer or Selocs.

Could go on and on but most of the problems have been covered which you may find in the search.

There are many masters on this site which you will soon spot by their excellent advice as you read through and they are most willing to help if you ask.

Good luck with your engine!
