Wiring a M40C outboard with a tachometer?

i am trying to wire a tohatsu tachometer to my outboard. it is a electric start model. the wiring diagram shows the white and yellow wires that go to the rectifier should also go to the tachometer. is anyone familiar with this? can i just splice the yellow and white wire that comes from under the flywheel to the rectifier and run these to the tachometer? thanks in advance for the help.
