Wiring '78 merc 115 inline 6 with '80 main harness and controls

Here's my deal. I purchased an 18/60 flat bottom river jon from a buddy for next to nothin with a blown (connecting rod thru the block) '80 115 ser #5923006. In the deal I also received a '79 115 ser #5241787 that is good except the internal harness. The '80 has cdi and quicksilver controls, while the '79 has distributor and merc controls. The '79 needs an internal harness, but the '80 has a good internal harness. Would it be possible to wire the '79 with the harness off the '80 to keep from having to change controls/main harness and all that? I'm pretty good when it comes to wiring/wrenching, so it wouldn't be an issue. I'm beginning to think that the '79 is a '78 tho cause the diagrams I found on maxrules has a '79 only diagram and it has cdi ignition not distributor. I'm ready to set the powerhead so any help y'all can give me would be invaluable thanks in advance!
