Wireless Printer installation! This is a real DUH!

After days of angst about getting my Wife's new wireless Brother Printer up and operating and after a full Saturday of good help from so many of the iboat members, several glasses of strong, adult beverage finally revealed the solution.

In a conventional wireless sense, I did get the printer to work. But my preference was that the Mrs's laptop remain hard wired to the internet.

Sitting in my Papa Bear Lazyboy recliner tonight, watching an exciting British thriller on PBS it was revealed to me that there was likely no reason, whatsover, that the wireless router had to be hooked up to the internet just to communicate between the Laptop and the Printer.

So I laboriously got down on my hands and knees and disconnected the wireless router from the cat5 cables, then reconnected the cable modem directly to the wired router.

I plugged the Mrs's laptop back into it's internet cable, turned it on, checked for the wireless router signal and printed off a document. Budda Bing!

Now there is no extra device, in the cable loop to diagnose if we lose internet connection. If the Mrs has any print issues, she can check for the wireless connectivity while her internet connection remains intact.

Sometimes I feel like such a dufus with all this computer stuff but tonight I am standing tall.

I am glad you got it hooked up, I was trying to figure out how to explain in that manner, but I guess, my mind was in the clouds with to many adult beverages yesterday as well..

Anyway, I will look you up in June when I am in Vancouver..I was scratching my head yesterday, trying to figure out why the wireless has to be connected to the net...but did not explain it well I guess..

Just an FYI if you have a wireless printer, make sure it does not get a dynamic IP address. If your printer gets a different IP address, your printer may no longer work.

How in Heavens name would I know if that was liable to happen OR how would I prevent it. My Printer is now up and operating but I am going to be helping my daughter set one up for herself and if this is a potential issue, I'd like to know all about it.

Well it depends on the router and printer. I would check the manual. I tried to write a paragraph on what to do, but then I realized I might leave you cross-eyed. I think as long as your printer is online you should be fine. If your printer gets turned off it might loose it's IP Address lease with the router and the router will give that IP to the next device that connects. This includes a guest's laptop for example. Your computer will then look for the printer on the old IP and be unable to find it. If you go turn on your printer and the lease for the IP hasn't expired on your guest's laptop, then your printer would get a new IP that isn't the same one configured on your computer.

It is like someone moving to a new house and not telling anyone or doing mail forwarding with USPS.

The way around this is to manually set a static IP outside of the dynamic IP range on the printer. That way your printer's address will never changed and no one will have the same IP as you at the same time, which is bad.

Now that I confused you, I would read the manually. Feel free to ask more questions.

If anyone else knows of new standards have come out that I am unaware about, feel chime in.

Just realized I wrote more than a paragraph ><

Does that mean that one would have to get a new printer ?

I ran into the issue of the routers IP address when I bought a new dlink a few months back. Seems the company server IP address was the same as the new wireless router. Took awhile to figure that one out. When I would ping the server, it was actually pinging the router so came back with a great signal but no connection to the server.

I don't have the computer smarts to explain it, and the company IT guy had to walked me through it. Your manual should talk about changing the address if it becomes necessary but not something you need to mess with if it's working ok.
