Wireing harness question...

I couldn't shake out an answer over on the J/E OB so I though I'd give it a try over here...

1998 Johnson 50 HP SPL and BRP side control. The motor has 6 pin male, 6 pin female, 3 pin female, 2 pin female. The control has 6 pin female along with the single wire connections.

So here is my question...

It seems as though all the harnesses I am eyeballing have an 8 pin male plug along with the other stuff. Example...

What is this 8 pin for? Am I looking at the wrong harness or something?

Thanks!

Re: Wireing harness question...

OK, I did see this diagram but it seems as though this harness is shy 1 plug on the motor side (I have 4, this shows 3) and this harness is plus 3 plugs on the control side (I have 1 at the control and this shows 4, assume the rest are for gauges?)

Sorry for the rookie questions! Just trying hard not to buy the wrong thing and learn along the way, ya know.

Here is a suggestion on finding the right part. First thing you need to do is get the full model number for your motor, then go to the link below and look up your exact motor.
Then find the wiring harness you need and get the correct part number for it. Now, when you look for aftermarket parts, make sure your OEM part number is what their part is. You really can't go by looks and just pin counts.

Re: Wireing harness question...

OK, I embarrassed to say this but I still can't see which harness I need.

J50TSLECC is what I have.

I can see down deep in in the Ignition System tab all the parts that make up the harness but I guess I don't see the complete harness part number...

Lots of good stuff on that link but I am still confused:redface:

So you got to the engine parts list didn't you? Back up to the index and look at the remote and tilt & trim folders.
