Going from a 5 pole to 4 pole connectors, there is a red wire (car side). What is that for? I can't find any match.

That wire may be connected to the reverse lights. If so it was used to apply the "brake line lock" on a trailer with disk surge brakes. Without it you can't back up a disc surge brake trailer.

Check for voltage on the wire key off, lights off. If no power then repeat test with the key on, engine off, emergency brake set, and the shift selector in reverse. Then check for voltage on that wire again. If voltage is present , BINGO. If not, with a four wire set up you shouldn't need it anyway.

I agree with poor, could also be a 12V battery charge wire for a small pop-up camper, i've seen this many times.

if it is a convertor 5 wires to 4 wires the red wire (car side) is for the brake light. your vehicle must have independant signal lights. white is ground, green is right, yellow is left, and brown is tail light
