Winterzation Question

Hi guys,

With regards to winterization, I have attempted to try and do it myself (3.0 Alpha 1) (quite possibly a big mistake). I figured if I'm going to own a boat I might as well learn to work on it myself, maybe make myself a little more useful.

So I winterized the engine by connecting muffs to the water intake on the outboard rigged to a hose and a bottle of RV antifreeze. The intake took the antifreeze and I seen the antifreeze come out of the exhaust on the back end of the boat. I also purged the block and manifold tubes ant the thermostat until antifreeze was coming out of the thermostat (hope this make sense).

The issue is the video I watched didn't mention that the block and manifold drain plugs need to be removed and drained (I know, I'm not very smart).

So I realized that this needs to be done. Today I opened the manifold and block drain plugs. When I started to drain them, I believe only antifreeze was coming out of them (especially the bloat). The fluid that was coming out of the block was very pink. The fluid that came out of the manifold was pink but I couldn't tell how dark due to a dark drainage paid (I emptied them both into the same pail and couldn't tell after. I drained some from the block directly into a cup and it was dark pink).

In the mean time the temperatures have dropped to -10C (14F) for the last 2 days with temperatures in the minuses for the last 5 days. I didn't winterize my boat before the low temps hit.

Have I messed my boat up? I know I'm an idiot for attempting to do this myself. Is there something I can do at this point. Or do you think I've removed all water am ok at this point.

All help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Max

Might have got away with it....if you are in any doubt, get someone else to do it or read some posts on here. I?m sure there are plenty.
You really need to drain everything completely before doing anything else like anti freeze.
Personally I don?t trust the antifreeze flushing kit method. But if you insist...you need to make sure the engine is run up to temperature first to allow the t Stat to open....then switch over to antifreeze.
I just drain down the block and all the rest, then manually fill with antifreeze through t Stat hoses then fill the exhaust assembly too until antifreeze runs out the drive.

If you let everything drain out of block and manifold you should be good. If it was not completely drained then your rolling the dice. If the AF is of sufficient concentration you can be good, if it was diluted to much then maybe.

The exhaust manifolds probably had a fair amount of water mixed with the anti-freeze . . . that is why the liquid from the engine block looked more pink than the liquid from the manifolds.

No sure way to tell, but you are probably OK with the winterization, given that you finally drained the block and manifold. Had you not done that, the colder temperatures to come this winter probably would have caused a hard freeze.

The way you initially winterized is basically incorrect, so the draining was helpful.

To better understand the issue with taking in AF through the muffs . . .

1) Take a cup filled to the top with water.
2) Now take an equal amount of antifreeze and pour it into the full cup, causing the liquid to immediately overflow the cup.

Once you have poured all of the antifreeze into the cup, how much water is remaining in the cup and how much antifreeze made it into the cup :noidea:

That is essentially what is happening when you pull the AF in through the muffs. It mixes with the water but does not purge the water on a 1-for1 basis.
