Winterizing outboard prop shaft?

I took my prop off my Merc 40HP. I bring the props down the basement for touching up at some point over the winter.

What's the consensus on leaving the shaft bare over my NY winter. I put a coat of silicone grease on it already.

I could put a plastic bag over it, but my thinking is that would only hold moisture in. I know it's made to get wet though.

Any thoughts?

Thx

I would leave it open perhaps adding a skirt circling the lower leg. It would be less exposed but ventilated.

Thx, good Idea. It's sitting straight up. I'll take a heavy duty plastic bag and skirt it. That will keep any ice or snow from buidling up on it.

You can also wrap a rag that is lightly saturated with oil around the prop shaft, use a couple zip ties to hold it in place.

The prop shaft is sticking straight up? So, the motor is tilted up?

Put the motor back down so the water can drain. I'd worry more about that than exposure of the SS shaft.

No, the outboard is straight up, not the shaft!
