Well the mighty Larson is not going south this winter as we plan to do a bit of travelling from our place in Ft Myers so are hauling down a small RV.

So, had to winterize this past week. The winterize portion (running it up, flush, antifreeze and fogging the engine) was $110.00.

The total bill for winterization, oil and filter and stern drive oil check and whatever other checks was $189.00.

Is this about par?

Dingdongs, think I saw something about labour being $90/hr, not positive.

Re: Winterizing Cost

Labor is $109/hr at my marina :(
But my mechanic, on land, is $60.
He's quoted me $185 for full winterizing (not counting the domestic water, sink, toilet which I will do)

Lake Gaston NC 4.3L Merc the dealers want $350 That includes the flush, anit-freeze, fogging, Oil change and Stern drive and Fuel stabilizer. Another $50 if they do it in the boat house. Pretty high.

Re: Winterizing Cost

I bought:

A used billboard (super heavy tarp) for storage for the winter: $50 shipped

Oil, gear oil, few o rings, gear lube pump, oil and fuel filter, gas stabilizer and fogging oil $130 shipped

I still need to buy An oil extractor, for which I am budgeting ~$80.

So, total to do it myself, $260. Of course, next year it'll be substantially less, I'd think, since I'll have the tarp and a few of the tools...

Re: Winterizing Cost

Just bought the supplies yesterday to do myself. Yammie dealer, so in other words no deal but I like to use the factory stuff:

4 litres of Yamalube 10W-30: $35
1 oil filter: $15
1 litre SAE90 gear lube: $15.00
1 fill screw gasket; 1 vent screw gasket: $3
1 spray can fogger: $8:00
1 water seperator filter: $20

So - $100 giver take plus my time (which won't be much, being an outboard). Local marina would be looking for $200 or so all in so you're looking pretty good to me Woody.

Re: Winterizing Cost

for 3.0 L Merc: change engine oil & filter, replace outdrive gear lube, fog engine, anti-corrosion spray on engine, anti-freeze in block, grease outdrive, $328 taxes in. And for an additional $300 you can get shrink wrap and free outdoor storage.

I decided to winterize myself and spent $220 on supplies, grease guns, lube pumps etc.. and store it indoors for $160. Next year should only cost about $60 to winterize.

Re: Winterizing Cost

about $110 to do it myself, but mine is relatively easy since it's an outboard.

Oil, lower unit oil, filter, fogging oil, spark plugs, and grease for hubs. Had to buy a new grease gun, siphon/small gas tank, and lower unit pump for tools. Wont need to buy those next year.

I used a full size tube of grease on my 2 of my hubs. Is that normal? I got the zerk behind the hub, where I pump and let all the grease come out the front.

Also, it's a pain in the *** to get to all the spark plugs on the Merc 60 4-stroke.

On my old 15HP 4-stroke, the 2 plugs are right in front of your face in the open. Very easy.

The newer motor, I have easy access to 1 of the plugs and the other 3 are very hard to get to, without removing other parts. Or is there a trick or tool that I can buy to make it easier?

Re: Winterizing Cost

Yeah, that seems about what they charge around here.
Merc labor at a dealer is running about $120/hour.
The place I get my Merc parts has several winterizing packages.
The base service gets the block drained, engine oil and filter changed, and fogging. That's about $200. Add another hundred to do the lower unit lube, and a couple other minor services. Add another hundred if you want the impeller replaced, and gimble and bellows inspected.
Do all that myself, but it's a lot of work and takes at least half a day.
Plus I really tore up my back this year, so I'm dealing with that too.

I feel for you guys. Things are just starting to cool off enough in Florida to get the fishing really going. We boat all year long.
