Hello. I have a Mercury Black Max Xr2 that recently decided to spend some time as a submarine engine ( boat And motor was submerged at the dock. Any tips for winterizing the outboard. It sits outside in the Southern Ontario winter. I have changed the fuel added stabilizer, fogged the carbs, changed the lower unit oil, sprayed fogging spray into the spark plug holes and run the engine for 15 min attached to a garden hose then pulled the fuel line and let the engine run out of fuel while digging the carbs. Did I miss anything and is there anything different you would do after recovering the motor from the bottom of the lake? ( submerged for about 8 hours )

thanks

The correct procedure is to run it for 45 minutes to assure it is dried out. Luckily it was fresh water.

after pulling the motor up from the bottom
change fluids
get motor running ASAP (may require changing or repairing electrical system components)
allow to run for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes
then go thru the winterization process

now onto the boat

your steering cable and helm will most likely freeze up on you over winter - the steering cable is never intended to be submerged

your throttle and shift cables will most likely freeze up on you

you will have water in areas that you cant get out.

you may need to change the wiring harness on the boat in a year as water will have wicked up the insulation on every wire.
