Have a non running motor (long story) on my boat.
I'm not going to be able to fix it till the spring.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to winterize it or what I can do to get any water out of it, to prevent freezing or any more damage over winter??
Much appreciated

~Neon~

Re: Winterizing A Motor (a different question...)

I assume you are talking about an outboard? If so then normally being in the normal upright (non-tilted) position should have drained the water. Can you turn it over? If so then I would remove the spark plugs and shoot a little oil into each cylinder and turn it over a couple of times (you don't want to turn it over for very long as it's hard on the water pump impeller). I would also drain the lower unit lube and put in fresh lube. I'm sure you'll get other ideas as well, it would have been good to put stabilizer into the fuel and run for a while plus it would have been good to fog it but hard to do when not running!

Pull the plugs and use an electric drill to spin the motor over while spraying fogging oil into each cyl (thru plug hole) and into carb throats while holding throttle wide open. Remember to turn it in the right direction. Might want to have the L/U in a bucket of water or on muffs to prevent any damage to the impeller as BoatinBob pointed out. Definitely change the L/U oil.

Any winterizing topic grabs the attention of a Canadian....lol

I winterized mine today actually.

Stabilize the fuel
Run the motor (if you can) for 10 minutes or more
Pull spark plugs
Spray fogging oil into cylinders
Open throttle plate wide open by hand
Spray fogging oil into carb throat
Rotate flywheel by hand a few times, or with key (kill switch enabled)
Replace spark plugs
Drain lower unit, checking for debris & water
Refill lower unit with fresh oil & new plug gaskets
Vaccum & clean entire boat
Remove portable gas tanks for storage
Remove batteries & electronics for storage
Position motor fully downwards to ensure water drains out of prop hub
Cover boat or store inside
Go online to read boating forums until it warms up again in the spring

Hope that helps.
