I have a 1996 Renell BRXL 17' Boat. I pulled it out of the water & is sitting in my driveway. I am new at winterizing boats so I wouldn't mind having a step by step with diagrams so I can winterize the boat. I have no shop manual. The nights are coming down to just about freezing temperatures so I am running out of time.Below are my serial numbers:
Engine=Mercury SN=0f758732 3.0L LX Alpha One
Mercruiser-SN=0f651546
Transom SN=0f651546
Date SN=0P716399
Any help on this would be much apprieciated. Thanks.

Re: Winterizing a 1996 Renell/Merc engine

If the vids don't help heres what I do pull the drain plugs port side right if your facing the engine then remove the thermostat and housing along with the all the hoses to the water pump and make sure your outdrive is down as far as possible at this point blow out all passages with compressed air from top to bottom you may need to probe the drain plug holes with a piece of wire to remove rust scale preventing water to exit the block and manifold. Also remove the hose from the thermostat housing the runs along the valve cover and blow air back through it will push any water back out throught the outdrive. after this it is up to you if you want to add any anti freeze to help prevent corrosion in the block and manifold but if you do replace all the hoses except the thermostat housing at this point is when you pour anti freeze into the housing mating surface port until it reaches the top drain hile on the block then replace that plug keep pouring until it reaches the manifold lug hole the replace it then keep pouring unitl it reaches the thermostat housing mating port replace thermostat housing and then wrap the outdrive with a plastic bag to keep debri out. Oh yea befor any of this change the oil in the engine and outdrive start engin on muffs with water and fog the carb with foggin spay until it stalls and or sputters. Also clean the inside of the boat and coat it with some good protectant and cover it up also put the outdrive down as far as possible to help relieve any undo stress on the bellows. And lastly get a merc service manual and read it cover to cover over the winter to prepair youself for the comming season. Good luck

Re: Winterizing a 1996 Renell/Merc engine

Thanks for the advice. I don't see an earmuff on my engine that shows on video one,so not sure where I would attach the garden hose to (I see a slotted plug underneath, but not sure if that is where the garden hose attaches to but I do have an air compressor to blow the air out,so I might try Lieutenant Commander's advice & do it that way. I would like to start the engine to defog the engine,so I would need to run water through the system. If somebody has a screen shot where I would hook a garden hose to,would be much apprieciated. Thanks for your tips.

Sorry about being naive, but i figured out what this earmuff attachment is & where it goes. Read up on it & found my answer. I will run to Canadian Tire to pick one up,& some antifreeze & fogging oil. I'm all set to go now. Thanks for all your help & will use all your advice.

Ayuh,.... The Most Important thing is to Drain the Block, 'n manifold,....

There's a block drain plug, portside, down low, just above the oil pan,....
The manifold drain is just above the block drain, upside-down, on the bottom of the manifold,...
You may, or may not have drains on the aft, lower corner of yer risers too...
And,...
Pull the Big hose off the circulatin' water pump, on the front of the motor....

Re: Winterizing a 1996 Renell/Merc engine

Thanks guys, I bought some earmuffs & ran antifreeze through the engine & fogged the engine, pulled the plugs out of the block & manifold. Took out thee spark plugs & gave it a little squirt with the fog. I will pull the hose off the water pump tomorow. When is the best time to change the oil, spring or fall? What type of oil is the best for my boat, I suppose 10w30 auto is not recommended. Thanks a lot for all your help & tips.

now you have winterised the engine it may as well be left until the spring as otherwise it may have been better to leave the engine with fresh oil but if its a new boat over the course of the winter a stabilizer to mix with your fuel should have been added to the tank and shake the hull to distribute the stabilizer.i always put mine in the tank when fairly full and on its last outing.if your brave over the course of the winter it may be wise to pull the complete drive and replace the impellor and the oil too so your good to go in the spring.if you have a garage it makes storing and working on the boat better and gives you something to do rather than watching tv or getting an earhole bashing from swmbo (she who must be obeyed).lots of people in the forums that will help with advice and problems.
