Winter Storage

I need some advice regarding a way to put my 18ft boat into the garage. Sounds easy, however my garage is up a relatively steep hill, which would make it difficult to get it in the door way. I've measured the opening (9ft X 8 1/4Ft) and it appears everything should just fit and the garage is deep enough (24Ft) but…I have some concerns. Not sure b/c of the angle if I would have enough clearance.

My question is, would it make sense to put a winch in the garage and try to steer it in slowly? Or just drive it up backwards? If using a winch, what type of winch would be able to pull the trailer and the boat up hill? Has anyone done this?

I see backing it in slowly as the best choice with SLOWLY being a key point.Maybe remove a tire once you are situated in there to prevent any rolling of the trailer or just chock it well.If you need more room you can remove the tongue of the trailer.Charlie

If hitting the top of the motor on the door frame is a problem. Remove the motor before backing up the hill.

Thanks everyone with your suggestion. It looks like using the Winch is not a good option.

I have another question for you guys regarding winterizing. What needs to be done to winterize if I'm storing in the garage? Is it any different then normal since the temperature is somewhat controlled?

I say back it up slowly also and block the wheels securely!!
If you can't be sure that the temp in the garage is always above freezing, then winterize just like normal.

Re: Winter Storage

Fog the motor before putting it in the garage. Then take the plugs out and spray foging oil in each cylinder and put plugs back in.Change gear oil now not in the spring in case of any water intrusion.Charlie

Re: Winter Storage

To get that extra inch of clearance you need, while backing it through the door way, you could try lowering the tire pressure. Just remember to do the same when you pull it out again!
