I have a 2001 50 H.P. Yamaha 4 stroke. I have heard different opinions on the proper way to treat this motor for the 6 month winter storage period. I am quite familiar with the 2 stroke motor maint of fogging etc.
Does the 4 stroke have to be fogged? Should you run the gas completely out of the 4 carbs and drain them? Or treat the gas and leave it in the carbs? Do you squirt oil in each cylinder?

Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Makky

Re: Winter storage main Yamaha 4 stroke.

In my opinion fogging a 4-stroke doesn't do much. 4-strokes already have a pressurized oiling system for the valve train, etc. and their cylinders are not as exposed to the elements as a 2-stroke with piston ports.

I treat the fuel with stabilizer, run the fuel stabilizer through the outboard, then drain the carbs. Then I squirt a teaspoon of heavy oil into each cylinder and turn the engine over a few times. Your manual will recommend the same. It's always worked for me. :)

You probably want to change the engine and lower unit oil before you put it away.

Dave
