Hi,new to this but hopefully some body can help me identify a volvo penta engine.I bought this boat back end of 2010 as a project. It came from a boatyard who were selling it to recover storage fees from previous owner. they could not give me any info on boat other than it was a Winner..Have just about got it done but now need some parts for engine and can only hazard a guess at what it is.Hoping i can post some photos of block with identifying marks. http://s1114.photobucket.com/albums/k523/geordielad2/

I'm going to guess it's and aq120b. Looks like a 270 outdrive. The Aq120b's were used in the late 70s, early 80s. First Generation fresh water cooled Volvo Penta's.

What year is the boat?

Look down low on the port side of the engine, in front of the starter for a tag that says the model number.

hi, yes i knew about tag but this engine has not got one the numbers and letters i took photos of was all i could find,i had originally thought it might be AQ140a with 280 outdrive,then seen outdrive had been replaced and like you thought 270.I have a volvo penta manual and read that front to back and still was not convinced as to what engine i had,also the carb on mine is not listed as fitted to any of the engines,its a Pierburg 175 CDU US.Basically all i think i know its a four cylinder possibly 2.0. 2.1 litre engine.starter motor someone has written on it volvo 360 in black marker a replacement starter i bought is hitachi s114-237 1.4kw 9 tooth pinion.The boat i think was made in 1974 stamped serial No.on stern is V 74245,

Hmmm...If it's a 74 than it wouldn't have come with that engine.

I based my guess on the fact that you have the side draft carb which was only used on the aq120b and aq140a. The 140a had twin carbs and used the b23 volvo block. The 120b used the b21 block and had one side draft carb. They used a Solex carb however...

What makes you think the outdrive has been changed?

I would search the block for either the b21 or b23 stamp. That would be a good starting point anyway.

when i got boat the outdrive had been fitted but there were parts missing and you could see outline of where original drive was fastened. It was also fitted with a right hand prop,my guess is that off a boat that had twin outdrives.Will search block again for any other stamps

Hi, back again,this time more success though a took a better pair of eyes than mine to see the tiny punched dots.It reads
B19A 499660 02057 the second 9 after 4 could possibly be a 3
