So I took my Sea Ray out for a test drive today (good and bad news there, long story) and the wind was up on the lake, up to two foot chop. I was fighting the wind and trying to keep it slow, having a very bumpy sketchy ride but I saw people with shallower boats than mine haulin' *** out there. Is that the trick? maybe trim it up and go faster in choppy water?

Re: Windy day.

Depends, solonfoster, on many factors.

What size is your boat and what is the distance between each chop? I been on several boats that love a chop and eat it up, others?...not so well. Normally, I would trim bow down into head or beam chop. Sometimes the chop will lift the bow, causing a rough entry. Each situation is different and diffficult to learn without expierencing each of them....which will never happen.

Your observation of what others are doing is putting you on the right track.

Good Luck!

It's an 18' deep vee, and those other guys were in pretty shallow fishing type boats. I wanted to trim it high and punch it but I had a kid with me so I just played it safe as I'm new to boating and I was working on a guess. Next time I'll try it high and fast !!

If you run hard and fast in that kind of water you are going to beat you, the boat and all that is in the boat to death. I have a 185Sport, I put a set of Smart Tabs on it and they made a world of difference. I Trim down a little and slow down and work my way through the rough water. If you look at those other guys they are jumping from one place to another, they are getting airborne, that is rough on everyone and everything. Slow down and take it easy, the boat will last a lot longer and you will enjoy the ride a lot more.

HA !! Thanks guys, I thought there might be some kind of sweet spot in rough water but it sounds like you just have to take it slow or take it hard !!
