Hi our old 2001 is running rough, we believe this is down to the coil. We tried a coil from another boat and it ran much better. We have tried a standard coil but this runs very hot then we loose power ( we have lost a lot of power now even when it's cold)
My question is does any one know what is the correct coil for it. I have been told by a previous owner that it requires a col of at least 1.6 oms as it has electronic ignition. I do not have a clue, can any one help ?

Many thanks

Re: Windsor 351

is your electronic ignition a conversion kit? many have used pertronix. another question is if you have a ballast resistor or not. maybe your old coil indicates whether it needs the resistor or not. mine does. you also might just have an electronic distributor. best bet would be to look for the model number printed on the distributor. might start YLMxxxx. i'd get that number and contact iboats right here on this site. they should be able to cross reference it and tell you if it is an electronic distributor or if it was converted. depending on how that info turns out they might need to know if you have the ballast resistor. trace the wires from the coil. if they lead to a ceramic looking item then you need a coil that's suitable for a ballast resistor.

rough running could also be bad fuel, timing, worn out plugs, crossed wires or just old wires that are mis-firing.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard bigtoe,... I agree with Salty, it sounds like ya might be fightin' a fuel delivery issue, 'n not a Coil issue,...

Coils usually Work,.... or they Don't,....

Re: Windsor 351

Hi thanks for the replies. I just had a look at the distributer and no numbers at all on it. It took the top of and the picture below is what we have, does that help at all?
image.jpg

I could not see a ballast restrictor but the coil has been replaced in the past by maybe the incorrect coil .

We have a LPG conversion make impco. I checked the solenoids and both are opening and fuel is getting all the way through to the round gadget on top with a button sprung loaded ( is it a condenser ?)

The simtions we were experiencing was good Pull away power up until around the 6th ski set, then it would pull away slowly then power would be regained. Now however the pull away is bad from word go and then gets worse and worse until the engine is stalling/cutting out.

We have replaced rotor arm, ht leads, plugs and fitted a coil (but suspect an incorrect one)

Does this help at all ?

Many thanks

Re: Windsor 351

can't see with the rotor in the way but that could be a pertronix conversion. i'm not an expert, i've heard they have good customer service when you call. the pertronix i have calls for no ballast resistor. but bondo is right. coils are often blamed but usually they either work or they don't. the electronic kits sometimes fail. people often keep their points as backups in case of electronic failure.

i don't know anything about lpg conversion but it sounds like it's starving for fuel. coils are cheap though. pertronix will know for sure which one you need.

Many thanks. As every one is mentioning fuel it may pay me to remove the filter and try it without that in place before trying to find another coil?

Hi ok I have managed to gewt to the boat and removed the filter and solenoids, def no restriction there so its either in the carb which a mate will look at. in the mean time the picture below is the distrib without the rotar arm doe that help in identifying which electronic ignition it is?

Re: Windsor 351

i think your best bet would be to check with pertronix.

your distributor is kinda rusty on the inside. have you checked your timing? if the timing isn't advancing at higher rpm's it would run rough. can you get your mate to check it?
