Windows 7 system restore?

Last nite Mrs B got a wild hair and downloaded a Ver 4? of Firefox. She didn't like it plus it deleted a lot of her setup. Soooooooooo, she got the bright idea that she could revert to the previous Ver 3.?.? by uninstalling it. I was sound asleep while she was excercising all these brilliant ideas.

If we choose a restore point prior to last nite, will her setup revert to the original FF?

Yes, just pick a restore point that was set before she installed F4 and it will revert back to that point, she will loose anything she did after that restore point, but it will be as if she didn't do anything.

Definitely no expert (so I should probably shut up!) but I don't think restore can overcome an uninstall.

I'll let you all know. Shouldn't hurt anything to try as she quit using the computer right after she did the deed last night.

Yes it can, I do it all the time, the restore will place the full registry back to the point before anything was installed, so it is like it was never installed, that is the purpose of the restore, I use it all the time on my computers when I am working with specific programs that I might want to purchase for our business, if it don't work out, I just go back to the point before I installed the demo copy or the trial copy..

I always set a restore point just before I install a program then install, play with, if I don't like it, I don't even uninstall, I just restore to the point right before I installed it, but if you have run the uninstall on the specific progam it will do the same thing, you won't even know it was installed once you do the restore.

Having trouble getting to the Restore Program. I googled instructions and the Microsoft site said to hit the F8 key as the computer started to boot, but before the windows logo shows up. The boot just stalls, with a shrill beep, until I let go of the F8 key then proceeds on to the desktop??

You should be able to boot to the desktop, then use the search feature and type in system restore, it should bring up the backup and restore page, I would not try it with the F8 feature before booting. If you still want to use the F8, don't hold the F8 key just tap it while the computer is booting up, the F8 feature is difficult to get to work right in these newer faster booting computers, especially on window 7 because it has a fast boot feature. There is a restore files wizard included with windows that will allow you to do just files, or the full system..

Yeah, I just found it it the search function. It is running now.

EDIT:

Interesting results from the Restore.

I used the restore for April 15. It restored the FireFox icon in the task bar but apparently did not restore the program. When I click on the FF icon, nothing happens. I think I will go see if I can re-download the 3.1.6? version of FF instead of the 4.0? version that she did not like.

Another interesting thing. I went to 'remove programs' to see what was there. MozillaFF 3.6.16 is listed with it's install date but it shows no size.

Does this mean that it is there and maybe the task bar icon is just not opening it?

I googled Mozilla FireFox 3.1.16. I went to download it. It state that we were already running that version and that we should download the newest 4.? version. It looks like 3.1.16 is no longer available and that we should bite the bullet and just re-download 4.?.

Have you tried to find in in your start menu, the shortcut link may be corrupted, click on start, then look through the programs you have listed or you might do a search for firefox.exe with the search function to see if somehow it got corrupted. If all else fails I don't have that version, but I do have 3.6.16

What didn't she like about FF4?

..... What didn't she like about FF4?

I re-downloaded ver 4.0. Apparently it is another one of those 'change for change sake'. The interface display is radically different. I found several references to that fact on a google. One may also be able to choose a ver 3*** display mode, however. I'll let the Mrs work with that.

I'm still stuck on XP and IE. I detest changes that take up my time and make no discernable improvement in ease of use.

Re: Windows 7 system restore?

I agree with your take on change for change's sake, it wastes a lot of my time when software does that. I looked at FF4 and decided that it didn't hold any benefit to me and I didn't care for the new interface. I'm using 3.6.16 now. From my experience, I think Firefox has gone downhill since I started using it a few years ago. I'm thinking or going back to IE, but I like tabbed browsing, so may look for something else.

I was under the impression that the latest version of IE has tabbed browsing?

I didn't realize that, I'll have to look into it, thanks. I have IE 6 now.
