I have removed my winch cable and replaced it with a strap.

Problem is I just can't get it to stop slipping. I installed a bolt throught the winch but it still slips.

What am I doing wrong?

Re: winch Strap slipping

You could have wrapped the strap on the drum without adequate tension, fishawk. Then it would slip until it was tight.

The drums usually have a hole, slot or device to properly attach the cable or strap. If this is not case, the strap still must be firmly attached so that if it"runs out" it can't come loose from the drum. It is important to tie, set-screw or otherwise attach the strap to the drum. Properly done you won't have slippage.

You could run 3 self drilling sheet metal screws into the barrel thru the strap. Then have someone hold the boat end of the strap tight and crank it onto the barrel tightly that should keep it from slipping.

Winch straps have a loop at the drum end. A bolt passes through one flange of the dum, then the strap, and through the flange on the other side. If that's how you installed it, it can't slip.

Upinsmoke is correct. That's how mine is fastened. There will be some slack the first few times you use it.

I wish they were all like the way Upinsmoke describes, but the ones that originally come with galvized cables (and some others) usually aren't...regardless, I think we all concur that the strap or cable must be secured to the drum

If you have access to a sewing machine, adding a loop is not rocket science. Fold it over about five or six inches and run a stitch along each side using heavy nylong thread. Make an X through the middle. (Look at your car seat belts for pattern). Drill two holes in the drum flange and you are all set. Bet Grandma can do that for you. Heck, I even make my own boat covers. If I can sew, anybody can sew. If sewing is out of the question, use three pop rivets to make a loop. (Use backing washers)
