I am new at this so here is my question. I have a 86 hydor-sport bass boat, 16 foot. I dont have a motor at this time. I can get a great deal on a 70hp johnson 4 stroke 2000 model. Will this motor be enough hp to plain the boat out. I just want to make sure it will work before i go on. I dont care about going fast just want to make sure that it will plain and go. thanks

A 70 will plane but youll be limited what you can do with it comfortably.<br />Have you seen the new Evinrude Etec.If it is half as good as they claim its pretty special. And they are running a special.Looks like they really did their home work. And its a clean 2 stroke.

There should be a plate somewhere in the boat that indicates its maximum HP rating. You should choose an engine that is in the upper 25 - 30% of that limit. Less than that will yield marginal performance with a full load of fuel, passengers, and gear.

"Limited what you can do". Skiing will be limited especially if you have more than just a spotter in the boat.As you add passengers the boat will become difficult to plane and lose speed easily. It wont be long and you will be wishing you had more power. You dont usually here anyone say "I wish I had a smaller motor."
