Will this hull get up on plane?

1989 Texoma Fiberglass pontoon. 24' Do you think it will get up on plane or just "push" through the water. Just installed a 150hp 2 stroke Black Max on it. Rated for 16 passengers or 3000lbs. Redoing the entire boat starting this weekend. The bottom of the toons have a "line hump" the entire length of the toon, otherwise they are flat bottom.

It will be pushing, the front of the "toons" are not even tapered

IMO, I would take the fin off the drive, the last think you want is more lift on the stern

What follows falls into the "wild guess" category. It would not surprise me if I turned out to be wrong. ..... IF the weight distribution were such that the nose had a little up angle before power was applied, AND if the engine trim could push the stern down and the nose up a little more, AND if you could go fast enough, I can imagine those flat bottom toons trying to plane a little. But I suspect they are not wide enough to generate enough force to lift the entire weight of that loaded pontoon boat onto plane. It would be interesting to try it with a very light load, all in the rear and see what happened. If it planed, then experiment with the size and distribution of the load.

That's the first one of those I've seen. I'm with the other guys. I'm not sure you could lift the front of the toons enough to get it to plane.

The motor also has a vented prop. Not sure that is a good thing on a barge, especially if the hull doesn't plane. You need all the prop "bite" you can get. Vented props provide a bit of extra slippage to get rpm up a bit to help get a planing hull on plane. The vents lose their effectiveness once on plane.

I dont think it would plane with less than 600hp.

The 150 hp will just burn more fuel than the 90 that was on there

If you keep it light so the front end can come up, and IF the transom and whatever it's bolted to holds, I'm with Tommy. I think it will plane. If it does get up on plane, it may be pretty quick!

The next question will be are the bottom of the pontoons reinforced to handle the kind of pressures involved with running on plane? Just a guess, but thinking the designer never intended them to plane.

Best of luck!

That hull is not designed to plane or have that much hp by the looks of it. That being said, I would love to see it up on plane and I believe it may be able to get up there if there is enough hp and the transom pod doesn't get torn off. Heck, but the time you hang enough hp on there to get it to plane it may be heavy enough in the stern to get those plowing noses of the logs up and out of the water. GL and if you do I wan't to see pics.

Good eye on the prop.....we're going to change it for sure. I have some great "trade power" when I walk in with that one! Not sure what it's rated at as the CG plate doesn't say. I redid the transom with 3 qty pieces of 3/4 ply, glass fabric and epoxy resin. There were 4 thick metal c-channel braces glassed in along with 2 metal plates where the bolts go through to hold the pod on. Replaced the metal plates as they were gone just like the transom. We also added aluminum c-channel under the pod for extra support. Going to do a FULL redo of entire boat....should I start a new thread or just continue here?
Thanks!

that pick doesn't look like a lot of tabbing under the gel coat. how far back does your new fiberglass transom tab back into the pod? it looks like 2" and should be about 12"

Looks like maybe a work barge, not intended to plane. But just about anything will plane as long as it's strong enough and has enough force applied to it. Cool project, please post pics and/or video when it's underway.

That reminds me of a derogatory comment a fellow pilot made about the F-4 Phantom back when I was in the Air Force. He said, "The F-4 is proof that even a barn door will fly if you put big enough engines on it."

Hopefully you're going to check out what you have going on with a water test, before getting to gung ho on a full makeover? Will be following closely any way you go, but I'd say maybe hold off on a new topic until you make the call to go ahead with further plans.

Well... yes, no and maybe...

You can get a brick on plane if you apply enough power with the correct thrust angle.

That hull with that engine. No.
Put enough power on the thing and it will either plane or the transom will come apart. (I bet that one will come apart before it planes)
