Hi Guys

I am in need of some help. I have a Evinrude / Johnson 1977 70hp outboard.

I recently moved across Australia and brought my boat with me. I bought the boat and motor from a friend about two years ago.

I rebuilt the boat and the motor got a new gear box water impeller plus housing, carbie cleaned out and it was running very well, as I said we moved interstate and the boat came over with us.

The motor was removed from the boat for transporting so the motor was left of it side, before I removed from the boat I cleared all fuel from the motor. It was sitting on its side for about 4 months. I decided to put it all back together last weekend.

When it was all back together I tried to turn it over, what I got was with plugs in it barely turns over, with plugs out it turns over fine. The battery has being fully recharged. I cleaned all the contacts again. When I took off the motor for transporting I also removed the gear box. I don?t believe it is the starter motor. I am going to do a compression test on each of the cylinder later tonight. Last time I did it I was getting 125 -115 on all three cylinders.

What to do next, what could be causing slow flywheel turn either the bad starter or blocked cylinder or something else.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Take a set of jumper cables and connect +directly from batt to + terminal on starter. Connect - cable to - on batt and touch the other end to a clean ground bolt on starter. Do this with the plugs in. If the engine spins over, the problem is either connections in starting circuit or a bad solenoid. If it doesn't spin, bad starter or the cylinders are maybe loaded with oil causing a hydraulic effect

Once you do the test that Lone Duck suggests: if the starter turns the engine over normally-it could be the starter solenoid. That solenoid has contacts inside. After years of use, the contacts get burned and won't transfer current properly. On the other hand, if the starter turns slowly after that test, the brushes inside could be worn. You can tear the starter down and replace them. Bombardier sells replacement brushes. Make sure the commutator is still smooth and clean the old carbon from inside the casing. Re-lube with a white lithium grease.

Just to throw another piece of advice out there......

Check your battery cables and feel them..... do they get warm. Corrosion inside the battery cables will rob you of allot of starting power. Insure ALL of the battery connections are clean and tight. I usually recommend that people remove cables and lightly sand off the connectors then re-attach. You are dealing with an older motor and the corrosion changes the resistance inside the wires.

I had a similar problem on a V-4 and ended up replacing the battery cables.

For me a similar issue was caused by contact between cables and the battery shoes. Some rubbing for the cable ends and it started like never before.

Hey Guys

An update:

I forgot to mention my trim was also playing up, I tried to raise the motor yesterday and she would not budge, I starting taking what you guys said about the corrosion on board and started cleaning all the cables contacts etc, I removed the bolts from the rams of the trim to the motor and the trim was able to move so maybe there is not enough power from the battery.

Q. How can I check that the battery is not on the way out. Its a new battery so should be fine.
I tried to do a compression test but couldnt turn it over. The battery is on charge again, I think I will also try the battery from my Van as well.

I will keep you posted.

Most places that sell batteries will do a "load" test it for you free of charge.

Did you do the booster cable check already mentioned in an earlier post ??

Update, I spend an hour this morning working on it. I managed to get the trim working, the earth cable had came off so got that working!

I tried the battery from my Van, I tried the jumper cable directly from the battery to the starter and it the same with plug in it barley turns with plugs out it pumps fine.

Do think there is an issue with the rings as it turns with plugs out fine.

Could there be a blockage somewhere?? if so where could that happen??
The motor was working fine about 4 months ago, I removed the motor from the boat as I was moving interstate. The gearbox was also removed.
What have done wrong.

Either your batteries are weak or the starter is weak or cables & connections are corroded . Do all the above checks. Then get back to us !!

Ok so did all the above and also removed the starter motor..

Think I found the problem

When I removed it I could smell something burnt!! I opened it up and a load of crap came out, when I opened it up I could see that there broken parts from the wall of the magnet jammed with the center part, it looks stuffed.

Looks like I will need to order a new one as the magnet on the wall are broken and the bushes are stuffed too!!

Anyone know where I can get a replacement - motor evinrude 1977 70 hp

Cheers,

NAPA sells a lot of marine starters. Glad you found the problem. Systematic checks solve the problem and saves you money.
