Will not start cold

I have a 1997 Sea Ray with a 4.3 engine and it will not start if it sets for a few days...after using gas or starting fluid (which I have been told to not use) it will start and run fine. I have had the carburetor cleaned and with new parts etc. and still have the same problem. I have installed a " momentarily on" switch that engages the fuel pump to pump gas into the carburetor before I try to start it since the carburetor is going dry after a few days, I engage the throttle prior to cranking and I don';t get any fuel into the carburetor, only hear air pumping. This works as long as the fuel pump comes on, but most the time the pump is not coming on and running. I feel either the fuel pump or the connection is bad. The fuel pump is very expensive and I feel that possbily the fuel pump wiring connector is bad. Does anyone have any idea where I can purchase the wiring connector that plugs into the fuel pump.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Will not start cold

Id look into/replace the check valve at the fuel tank or look for other air leaks. But the electrical connection issue is simple. Cut the wires and go direct avoiding pull apart connections. Di electric silicone will help to avoid corrosion if you chose to clean it up and reuse the connector.

An after market electric fuel pump is very cheap and readily available at NAPA. I put one on my 24' 77 Searay with a 350 V8. Connect it up to the electric choke lead or any "ignition on only" power source close by. Of course an in line water/fuel separator is a must.

You need nothing "Special" per se' to do any of this.

Why would a check valve in the tank affect anything to do with this problem?
How is that valve going to take the gas out of the carb?

In two words "It Can't".

Thanks,

You have a leaking carb fuel bowl. That is the long and short of it.
A rebuild wont fix it unless the guy doing the rebuild is looking for that problem when he is doing the rebuild. The best way to remedy this is to replace the carb, used or new, what ever. A new one will give you a warranty and thus make it a better option. The fuel, once it the carb has only 2 places to go, 1 in the motor, 2 into the atmosphere. It wont dry up in a month so a couple days is out of the question leaving only the number 1 option left.
I cant speak your home done wiring job, but if you replace the carb and return the wiring to factory, it should run like a champ.

The check valve whether it has one or not has nothing to do with this problem.
