I just got new lip grip tool and after of several uses on 25"-35" pikes I'm not
sure if the tool will harm the fish.
It works great but every time the tool penetrates the bottom lip of the fish all the way. Will the fish heel without problem ?

Thanks

From my experience a Pike will live through anything short of a baseball bat or prop contact and heal up just fine :p

If it's a heavy fish it will. Rule of thumb is to always support the belly with your other hand when you're holding them by the lips.

Re: Will lip grip harm fish ?

a ~ 5 lb pike got his revenge on me last Sat... as I was reaching out of the boat to lift him by the gill plates, he jumped up and bumped my hand with his gaping mouth... I needed to use a piece of string as a tourniquet on my finger to stop the bleeding, and then crazy glue to close up the deeeeep cut/gash!

I was alone at the time. Good thing I'm not the squeemish kind... lot's o' blood.

So upshot is that I have no idea about your lip holder thingy, but I'm re-thinkin' my pike unhooking strategy, so will be looking to see what the local fishing places carry.

Reminds me that I need to re-stock my fanny pack that has bandaids, string, polysporin etc. type stuff.

hehe, exactly why I got the lip grip :)
The fish sustains most damage in early stages when shaking it self to get free. I do support them later for taking pictures.
I don't eat/keep any fish so it breaks my heart to hurt them :)

if you hold them horizontal supported only by their lip it can damage ligaments. notice how you can pierce a fish's lip and it doesn't bleed? My theory (unsupported by any science) is that's just like cutting your fingernails. Have any old scars on ya that don't hurt if you poke 'em with a pin?

You right, no blood, it would be interesting to see how fast it heals.

The crazy glue on cuts has saved me from much misery as well BF. If you use it on your fingers make sure it is COMPLETELY dry before taking a leak. I'm not joking, although it is funny now.

LOL gluing your hand to your nether regions.... good one! :)

I was by myself at the cabin (after fishin') and was just gigglin' the whole time I was trying to glue it up properly. 1) the kitchen looked like an episode of CSI (with assorted blood splatters) and 2) that the tip of the glue was all solid, so I ended up having to cut the crazy glue tube in half with kitchen sheers (and therefore I had little control of where the glue was going)

1 & 2 struck me as extremely funny at the time. I was wondering if I'd be able to drive if I glued my 2 hands together.

My buddy that was with me died shortly after (R.I.P.) and his wife swears it was from laughter. Instead of tubes try the little bottles of superglue. They don't clog like the tubes if you clean the tip after use. MJ
