I have a 1997 Evinrude 50HP (E50ESLEUR). It's a "new to me" motor, and I've gone through the entire engine this spring. I deleted VRO (replaced with regular fuel pump), rebuilt carbs, new spark plugs, all new fuel lines, water pump kit, t-stat, new coils, power pack and voltage regulator. I basically went through the entire engine as also completely rebuilt the boat it's attached too.

I'm at the point where I'm ready to do a link & sync procedure to make sure everything is tuned correctly before putting back into service this morning. I used OEM parts for everything I replaced (including fuel lines), with the exception of power pack and regulator (went with CDI).

Am I able to set the timing on this engine with the Joe Reeves Method? This engine does have SystemCheck and S.L.O.W. mode on the power pack. I've never owned an OMC if this era, I'm more familiar with the 1950s & 60s era OMC stuff, so an outboard this "new" is a little foreign to me. I have reason to believe the previous owner was messing with linkage adjustments, and had no idea what he was doing.

Any input on Joe Reeves being able to be applied to this era motor would be greatly appreciated, as I do not have access to a test wheel prop, or the space to adjust timing at WOT.

Many storage yards now require " minimum or no fuel "------No batteries in place or hooked up.-----Never mind when folks want to store an EV of some sort.-----It is becoming scarier every year.

Agreed. I can fix/rebuild my old OMC's with a few wrenches, a pair of pliers and a flat blade screw screwdriver, and they'll reliably run for decades before needing service again.

At the same time, I'm fretting over "new technology" already obsoleted nearly 20 years ago... The most electronics I'm used to on an OMC was my electric shift solenoid in my '66 Johnson V4. Even though I'm only 34, I'm an old-soul at heart and learned my skills from the old-timers. I've never owned a boat with factory electronic ignition before, so I'm learning as I go.

Yes you can use the joe reeves method. You need to defeat the Qwik start feature.
