Sure sounds like the prop, Rwise. Get a brand new Michigan Wheel one here for 78.00. Just click on "Propellers" at the top of the page.

Don't buy anything until you determine the engine is going into gear.

if i'm not mistaken, didn't the 60's have a shear pin. pull your prop, if i'm thinking correctly, there is a pin that goes thru the prop and propshaft. it is probably shear off. they used them, incase you hit something you didn't destroy the lower unit. if this is the problem take a your prop to a johnson or evinrude dealer and get a couple of shear pins.

Shear pin. Take the pieces of the old one with you to the dealer. Don't need to take the prop.

Before you even do that, look around inside the covers. Many of them had a spare in a little clip in there.

Good luck. :)

Even what everybody calls pin-drive props have rubber hubs that can spin. Have it checked by a prop shop. Usually if there's anything wrong within the gearcase, when you take it apart it's obvious. You say it all looked good.

Then what rwise said. Easy to check, just draw a line on the prop from the outside part with the fins to the part that has the shear pin going through it. Take the boat out and run in until it slips. Check to see if the marks still line up. If they don't, spun hub: the rubber cushion between the hub and the outside part is slipping or shredded.

If you've got the lower unit off and the splines at the top of the driveshaft are fine, a spun hub is pretty much the only possibility with the mechanical shift. Since you've got it off now, when was the last time the water pump impeller's been replaced? It's a 5 minute job at this point and should be done every few seasons.

EDIT: A little too slow today. :) Did you take the skeg cap off, or the entire lower unit?

Re: will it be worth it?

will /does a spun hub let the propeller turn freely
the case that i removed was all below the propeller shaft, in fact the shaft came down with it and what looks like the shift thingy

Just get the service manual, oldhull. The parts manual is on line for free, and everything in the owner's manual is repeated in the service manual.

Re: will it be worth it?

Spun hub means the buna hub around the splined center is not holding ... it won't normally allow free turning by hand, but will allow the prop shaft to turn, while the prop barely moves. Easy fix by a prop shop ... they use a press to install a new hub.

Paul explained how to verify. Make a mark the the outer prop and another on the bronze center of the prop with an indelible marker pen. If the marks move relative to each other after running in gear, the prop needs to be either replaced or rehubbed, whichever is less expensive.

Yeah, I'm afraid you're going to need a couple new seals and some sealant to put that lower unit back together now. It'll leak oil for sure without it.
Here's a picture of a 40hp prop with the hub pressed out:

As you can see on the right, the bronze hub is jacketed with a peice of rubber which serves as a shock absorber. Sometimes it slips in the housing.

Re: will it be worth it?

You guys really ought to give a little thought to what you are telling these people before you have them tearing into the gearcases and ripping carburetors apart.

About 90% of the time the motors have extremely simple problems like spun hubs and inadequate batteries that can be dealt with without parts diagrams and service manuals.

K.I.S.S.

If you don't know that the old props had rubber hubs AND shear pins, why don't you back off and let somebody who knows what they are talking about answer the question so the guy isn't off the water for a month?

Re: will it be worth it?

let's go back guy's, 1960, it was along time ago, i think he doesn't have a splined prop shaft. the shear pin does, what the newer splines do now. you break a pin and the prop doesn't turn with the shaft. the nut and cotter pin just hold the prop tight to the pin.
