WILL I BURN IT UP???

Ok, here's my deal. I have a 1997 Mariner 30 hp, that I put on my jon boat. I took it down the river last weekend. (yes, downstream). The river was shallow in places, and I hit a sand bar. I thought no biggie, shut it off and floated through it. When I started it back up, absolutely NO water came out of the pisser. So I shut it off, pulled the cover off, and pulled one of the water plugs in the head, then started it. Pumped fine out of it. I still parked it and walked back to my truck. will I overheat it if I run it this way? (can't do much wrenchin' on the river, plus I'm not qualified). Any comments are much appreciated.

Hey...if you gulped a bunch of sand, I bet it might plug up your pisser too!

Try the roto-rooter method by running a small piece of wire up into your pisser tube...of your outboard, that is. Maybe it's just clogged up...

Walt

P.S.

Just be thankful it was sand... With my luck, had it been me, I'd be writing asking for the best deal on a new lower unit....

Walt

Thanks Walter,

One more question though, if that works, should I worry about my water pump? I'm not experienced with Mariner outboards, but I had a Johnson, did the same thing and it fried it . (My stupidity for not feeling behind it for water I guess...) I guess what I'm asking is, If the pisser squirts, don't worry?

PS Whats the real name for the pisser. (I hate calling it that)

I don't know what the "official" name the marine industry folks call it...but that's the name the marine tech's in here use! To be a bit more politically correct, you could refer to it as...oh, say... "the engine's raw water pump pressure/flow indicator stream". Now, how's that for PC?

Raw water pumps should be considered one of the most vital components of your engine. If yours hasn't been changed in the past 2 -3 years...or if you suspect it may have been damaged, then by all means replace it. It's cheap insurance. Besides, your engine will love you for it...and maybe just forgive you for running her up on that sand bar...

Walt

Oh...by the way. When referring to the pump located in the engine's lower unit, notice I use the term "raw water pump"...instead of just saying "water pump". That's because us I/O guys find it very offensive NOT to differentiate between the "raw water" (a.k.a. "sea water") pump, and the automotive type water pump used on our hybred configurations.

Walt
