Will dislodged Shutter affect the idle?

Merc 898/305 Chev. We've suspected that we have had a rattling shutter but have not had occassion to pull the exhaust tube to inspect.

Suddenly, while on the water, the motor will not idle below 2000ish rpm. It was ok when launched. There was no opportunity to assess any loss of high end power, before returning to the launch, because the water was extremely rough.

All of the engine basics have been verified as ok by a knowledgable mechanic.

Possibly Boomer, but I believe a restricted exhaust affects the engine more of the opposite... i.e. will idle but can't get any higher RPM's.

Does that old-timer have a shift interrupt switch??

Good question KaGee. I recently wondered that myself. Are you thinking that a bad/grounded switch might affect kill the idle? Where would you look for the switch and if it was bad, wouldn't it just kill the motor period?

I have been feverishly keeping my eyes open for Manuals # 1 & 2. I might just have to pick up a Seloc in the meantime.
