Will decarbing foul the carbs?

I recently decarbed a Evinrude 225hp Ocean Pro and when I pulled the plugs they looked a little dry...Just wondering if maybe something gummed up the carbs when I decarbed. Up to this point the plugs had a nice coat of oil residue on them.

willx.....the reason the plugs were dry was because the decarb burns when you run it through the motor, as it burns it cleans off the plugs and it is also burning a little lean and hot when it burns the decarb so it heats the plugs up as well. After you let the decarb sit a little while and run the stuff out of the motor, re-check your plugs and they will most likely be wet again, that is if they were before, were your carbs running good before? Good Luck.

mmpeck,

The powerhead was just rebuilt and has about 40 hours on it. The carbs were rebuilt at the same time and the plugs have looked the same since the rebuild...medium brown and a light coat of oil.

After the decarb I ran the motor at 1500 rpm on the muffs and then replaced the plugs...then took the boat out to the river and ran it at about 1500 rpm for about two hours. I checked the plugs when I got back and they looked a little drier than they used to. The boat also just got back from the mechanic where he adjusted the carbs because the motor kept stalling when I put it into gear. He said it was running rich in the idle circuit so he leaned it out...he may have advanced the timing because it was retarded 1 deg.

Thanks

will....it's good to go out and open the motor up after a decarb to get all of the loose carbon blown out, 1500 wouldn't get much out. Also when you run on the muffs the engine tends to run a little leaner so you probably wouldn't want to run it higher than 1500. I would go out and run her hard for a little while at wide open throttle, it won't hurt it. Have you been adding extra oil during the break in period on that rebuild? Good Luck.

mmpeck,

Thanks for your reply...

Yes, I ran double oil for the first ten hours and varied the rpm's with very little full throttle. The motor has run great!...I was just a little concerned about the drier plugs...I'm going offshore Saturday for a full day of grouper fishing...I'll check the plugs when I get back.

Also, will advancing the timing a degree cause the engine to run leaner and/or hotter?

willxuout2,

I think you have the answer to your question in your second post.

1. Running at higher rpm's under load, burned the rest of the decarb solution off.

2. Your tech. adjusting the idle circuits. That's when the most build up would occur.

hello
nope dont sweat a degree. I dont sweat two or three as long as it idles at the proper rpm in gear in the water. no way to clog a carb with decarbing. why would you decarb at 40 hours?
if it aint broke dont fix it. I think OMC only reccomended every 100 hours
good luck and keep posting
