...be adversely affected if it was contaminated with engine coolant from a blown head gasket?

maybe, I had the same question last year with the same problem, here's what I did, take the car for a ride and then run the computer codes, if it's damaged you'll get a oxygen sensor code and likely a Check Engine Light, BTW, AutoZone will run the codes for free, well obviously to sell you a few sensors. :)

Thanks SS, just getting ready to fire it up after replacing the headgasket. It was really pumping a lot of coolant out the exhaust manifold, right by the OS.

My pleasure, hope your's turns out better than mine, after I replaced the head gasket it only had 5 good cylinders, seems one cylinder had smoked the rings when it overheated. The wife thought all was okay when the cloud of white smoke stopped so she drove it home, oh well, can't win em all.
