I have a 58 johnson 35 hp seahorse and was just on E-Bay any some guy has a 57 thats he is piecing out. Course he is selling it piece by piece by piece. I mean transon, cowl, one bolt, one lock washer, one nut well maybe not that bad but close...Stands to make a fortune off very few parts though. Anyway enough griping..Do 57-58-59 pretty much interchange or are 58 and 59 the only interchangable ones? thanks pickupmn

Re: will 57 and 58 interchange

I don't think so. Some of the difference is internal and not a problem unless you go to mix and match parts. The propshafts with threaded-on propnuts use slightly different gears than the non-threaded kinds. The splines on the shifter portion are also different. Beyond that they're the same thing except for the housings. I believe yours has a Super Quiet midsection. The guts are the same, but the housings are different than the older 35s. I think 1958 is probably the first year of the Super Quiets and those interchange mostly with 40s. If you look at the mounting surfaces, the difference should be easy to spot in a decent picture. Or if you have to remove a rear cowl to get to the back attaching bolt, then it won't fit.

Re: will 57 and 58 interchange

Well the housings look pretty much the same.I had asked what year mine was in another post and was told they only made the 35 in 57-58-59. and mine is a 58 and was told that I believe the 58 and 59 some were the super seahorse but mine is the regular seahore. So I thought that maybe the 57 was a closer match than the 59. They have a parts manual for a 57 on ebay so I bet it would't work either would it? Thanks for the info so far though. Pickupmn

JB will probably move this to Johnnyrude problems. If you post it there Joe Reeves will problably give you the answer you are looking for. I think that the 57 and 58 are interchangeable I have a 57 that I use on my duck boat. Good luck :)

Just about everything is the same since you have the basic model that didn't get the Super Quiet midsection, fuel pump or thermostat. Anything specific on your mind?

Will bolt on fine. Sometimes theres some internal differences, but that doesn't make a difference on the outside. What's wrong with the one you've got?
