will 1973 lower unit fit a 74 Merc 500?

Greetings,

I need to overhaul my lower unit on a 1974 Mercury 500. I found a 68-73 complete lower unit. Does anyone know if this will fit the 74 model? Thanks

Do you have a serial number for your '74 engine? Do you have any parts numbers off the 68-73 LU and how do you know it is for these years? Are both LUs short/long/xtra long?

Do you want to just install the 68-73 on the '74 or are you going to use the parts from one for the other?
