Weather-Very Nice, unless a hurricane is brewing.

New Orleans has a great amount of VERY interesting history. That was always my interest, when I lived there. If that is your interest, visit the plantations, up river.

Otherwise, if you frequent the French Quarter, plan on seeing decadence beyond belief. A real cesspool.

"A real cesspool."

Ahhh, home sweet home. i was fortunate enough to call that place home for 15 years. i love it, go back whenever i can.

you can expect hot humid days, anything else is lagniappe!...that's local talk for extra. you might get lucky and get some cooler weather but i wouldn't count on it yet.

what does your admiral like to do? if the answer is drink, you don't even need plans. it will find you.

there's plenty to eat, lots of shopping, some tourist-y type stuff like aquariums n stuff. platation tours, swamp tours, voodoo tours, cemetery...all kinds of stuff.

if you're hitting the french quarter and need a hotel, check this place out... http://www.hotelstmarie.com/

i just stayed there in june. if you're going mid-week, you absolutely cannot beat their price for such a nice place. i was amazed.

Gee, I can't think of a single reason to go to New Orleans other than the Aquarium of the Americas. Just beyond the French Quarter, miles upon miles of poverty stricken, run down, crime riddled city rolls on and on. It is filthy dirty, and dangerous. Inside the French Quarter, it has been cleaned up a LOT in the last few years. Still though, it is a den of depravity. What is it your wife wants to do? If she wants to party and drink, the New Orleans is the place. If she wants to see interesting things, what about Washington DC? Or theme parks like central Florida? Or really great casinos like Gulf Port/Biloxi in Mississippi? Or the sugar what beaches of San Destin Florida? On the occasions that I have traveled to Texas, I take I-12 and by-pass New Orleans all together.

My suggestion was Florida and a new bikini. :D But a little party down don't hurt,,, much

I'll try to get more info from her on just what she really wants. What I found on the net was October feast every weekend, I didn't know there was/is that much German influence there. Maybe if I'm good she'll let me have a day to go fishing!

Re: Wife wants to go to New Orleans for her birthday

Louisiana has some some very relaxed fishing regs, so if you get the chance to fish, go after red fish! In Florida we can only keep one per fisherman per day within a slot of 18" to 27".

In downtown New Orleans, there is a casino, it used to Harrah's, don't know if it still is or not. It's located just adjacent to the Aquarium of the Americas, and the New Orleans World Trade Center tower. You see a lot of diplomatic plates on vehicles around the WTC. Anyway, the Harrah's has a nice hotel attached and a parking garage, and it is walking distance to the French Quarter. To the west on I-10 the Atchafalaya Swamp, one of the most beautiful places on earth, and there is GREAT fishing there, and alligator tours and stuff.

Also, there is a WWII museum in New Orleans. Hope you have an enjoyable trip. Keep your sight seeing confined to the French Quarter/downtown area. Only go the cemetery with a guided tour (their are projects right there at the cemeteries and people have been shot, killed, raped, robbed etc. from by the people who live in the projects), and if you have a concealed carry license, use it. The last time I went to New Orleans I did what I always do in big cities. I got off the beaten path and shunned the touristy stuff. I went to the cemeteries with just myself and my buddy Tim. We ended up driving around in the projects, then ended up driving around in a very poor area that just kept going and going and going. I was glad I had my pistols, because we went through areas where we obviously were NOT welcomed. I just cranked up the country music and smiled and waved. Anyhoo, have a fun and safe trip!

I love New Orleans. Go down in the public square and just sit and drink and watch the show. Talk to the homeless, listen to the raving idiots, dodge drunken pukers.

At night you can catch all the shows, just dont believe the "free" thing they all claim.

And if some kid bets you he can tell you where you got them shoes, tell him you got them on your feet. :D

Man I wish I could be there this weekend, its a blast.

But I love freak shows, and New Orleans is one big one.

Ken

OK, She said what she really wants is to go to the beach! (already picked up the new bikini :D ) So I think I can get her to go for Florida, maybe stop in New Orleans for the day.
