We were yet woken up by the sounds of someone getting murdered...again. I finally did some research and found out we have a rare animal called a Fishers cat shreaking outside out house. It is a 1 second shreak that are 5 seconds apart that repeats a few time. Charlie, my pooch, is concerned. As intriguing as this, it is starting to get annoying.

yup, we got them too, around here . . . not the sort of 'cat' that a dog could scare away either

Fisher Cats are common here in VT. Be very careful....... they really do feed on other animals such as cats (a big part of their diet when available) and small dogs. Yes, they will make your hair stand up the first time you hear one close by.

There is also a bonus to having them around. You won't have any small pests. They make a cat look like an amateur when it comes to catching mice and squirrels.

I think of them as a big weasel (sort of)...and yes, the sound is blood curdling!
We have them here in Eastern Ontario, too many. I've seen them a few times in daylight and they are not small by any means.
Also, fierce enough to not back down just cause I'm a human. Took swinging a shovel one time, in daylight, to chase one away from my rabbits. ugh.
If you have fisher's, its because there is food in the area that he/she has come looking for.

Ah....the memories.... (shiver)

We've also had coyotes here that have made a call or scream that was like a woman getting murdered in the woods across from the house.

Yeah Coyotes and Foxes make a similar - baby being killed sound. Freakish to hear on a calm night.... can hear at quite a distance!

Right up their with the diabolical sounds of Racoon's fighting!!!

Ha, walking down the road in the dark to get to the boat at night, on too many occasions, I've had coons start fighting in a tree almost overhead. Almost like they time it to see if they can get me to grease my shorts...

Re: Wierd sounds at night

I just read the article contained in that link. It was brief but very interesting because it mentioned something I'm beginning to think is becoming a trend; critters returning to formerly indigenous habitat. Here it's black bears and cougars. Black bears were all over Arkansas until 1900, by which time they'd been hunted to near extinction. AGFC has been re-establishing them for a while, but the population has exploded in the last few years, and I understand that's partly from native stock. They're everywhere here. And, there's a growing conversation about cougars returning to the area. AGFC's official line is they aren't, but they are. Told the admiral I was probably going to pick up a can of bear spray before my next multi-day float trip. It's unlikely I'll ever need it for a bear or cougar, but ya never know, and I expect it would work just fine on a two legged varmint as well.;)

Ever hear a cougar let out in the middle of the night? Will make you hair stand in end.

Heard some spooky critter noises on my various camping trips, but I'm not sure if I've heard a cougar. What do it sound like?
