found a loose ring, or seal collar or something in the opening where i insert the driveshaft when i reassemble lower unit.

it floats on the shaft, so i thought it may have once been a seal.

i cannot find this part in diagrams what could it be?

i found part number 65800 which is described as 'PACKING' in part searches.

i think it somehow goes onto the end cap on the bottom side of crankshaft.

how does one of these things attach? why would it come out?

ok its also known as the seal carrier. how does it just fall out?

is it held up by an o-ring or something?

Could it be the driveshaft slinger ring the goes on the drive shaft above the water pump. Maybe it stuck to the bottom of the upper unit when you removed the lower unit.

I thought that. The slinger ring on Merc 20 is a black rubber ring diameter of drive shaft & about 15 mm long. It goes on the drive shaft pushed down on top of water pump.
