Hi I have a 1987 Thompson 165 Cutlas Bowrider with a Mercruiser 120. I purchased it last year, and while it was in excellent mechanical shape, it was cosmetically pretty bad. A little rubbing compound, machine buffing and interior scrubbing and the boat looks as good as a 1987 can get. I just replaced (with much help from the iboat forums) the rotten stringers and floors (the only major problem with the boat) and put in new carpet.

My main question is, now that I have my boat all cleaned up, I want to protect it with a cover. The problem is, my boat model (a '87 Thompson 165) is of slightly odd proportions. What Thompson did, is basically take the same hull design of their 18-19 foot models and simply make them shorter at the rear of the hull, resulting in a very wide 16 foot boat. Although the length of my boat on center line is only 16'5", the beam, at its widest point is around 100" (slightly more) making finding a mooring cover that fits nearly impossible. Most covers do not come in 100 inch widths until around 20 foot lengths, the 16.5 foot lengths are normally around 90 inches, resulting in many disappointed returns. Does anybody know where I can find a reasonably priced cover that is wide enough but not to long? Althogh my boat is now in great shape now, I still am not in the position for the expense of a custom cover. I have looked many places (including iboats) and have not been able to find a cover. Any help would be appreciated!

Happy Boating,

Dan

I looked all over and can't find it anywhere.. Most 16 foot boats like that have a beam of about 83"!! However, the problem can easily be solved if you wanna spend some more money, and get it made custom.

Yeah I know, and it may be the way I Have to go. my main gripe is that the boat really only sits out side for about a week and a half every summer when we go on vacation and I leave it in the water. The rest of the year it stays comfortable indoors in my garage when its not in use. That coupled to the fact that I practically stole the boat at $650 last summer (I know that I could easily get 4 times that for it) i just could not justify spending more then half that price for a cover for a week or so out of the year.

I did find a Harbormaster "Silver" 17-19 foot cover that is for up to 100" beam, for around 50 bucks on the walmart website. Anybody have any luck with them? I know they are pretty thin (similar to camping tent type material) and they are not available locally, but at that price I may just buy one and give it a try.

Call Angola Canvas Co. in Indiana. They have patterns going way back, and they are custom covers. Not the "semi-custom" covers you read on various web sites.

Thanks, I will give them a try. My Uncle has a place on lake George a few miles up the road from Angola, so that might work.
