why won't it start?

I am waiting for a mechanic to diagnose the problem but curious as to what he is going to tell me?

Honda 2006 4 stroke 115 hp outboard motor won't start.

It cranks but won't start. What are the common reasons for this if there is no fire going to the cylinders? How about if there is spark?

The engine has been sitting for a least 2 yrs; however, it did start for me during a test about six months ago.

What is your best guess of the problem and how much should I expect to spend to get it started?

You need only 3 things to make an engine start, compression, quality fuel in the right proportion and ignition. To continue running you'll also need exhaust. That tech is going to tell you which of those you do'nt have.

make sure that your neutral switch is activated. I cant tell how many times that thing has got me...
Clean the carbs if it sat with gas in it. Honda carbs can be cranky if left for too long.

Test compression and spark...those are easy things that you could do. Knowing those two items will help us help you.

Re: why won't it start?

The intial check by the mechanic stated that compression was good but no spark going to the cylinders. I had a friend (non mechanic) check for spark using a tester that would lite up if there was spark, and he said he had spark (not sure if that is a valid test method). Don't want to get ripped off if the problem is as simple as bad gas that has been sitting for 3 years. The Honda is fuel injected 4 stroke 115hp.

you could try and drain the carbs bowl and give it a try with new gas if not it will be a good idea to clean the carb good assuming you have good comparison and good spark and you might want to change the fuel filter and check the fuel pump as will.

This thing has been laid up for awhile so get yourself a clean fuel source and purge that fuel delivery system entirely .#1 take a fuel sample from the vapor separtor to see what water ,crap, etc, comes out.#2 purge the fuel to the the indicator by pumping the primer into a fuel safe container#3Change that little white filter and purge to the low pressure fuel pump.#4Purge to the vapor separator which is now empty because you drained it earlier. If you found water contaimination in that fuel sample you might consider inspecting the pressure regulator lines but not ussually an issue.Do all that, try and fire it off ,and let us know what happens.
