Why do they put 2 carburetors on outboards?

I have a 1987 Classic 50 with two carbs that I need to clean and re-adjust.

The only thing I can think of is it seems to have the crank case separated to power the fuel pump.

I'm sure is also has to do with engine performance, but is seems to be more trouble than it is worth.

Re: Why Two Carbs

Some outboards have one carb. Some have up to 6 carbs. Whatever it takes to get the desired HP.

Outboards are not lawn mowers. They are a lot closer to hot rods or high performance sport cars.
