Ok, This is like driving by an accident... you have to slow down and look

So maybe you know why my 1989 7.4l nuked? Looks like the pin broke free, and punched out the cylinder wall --- But why???

Old adage... Piston broke! Story of my life!

Looks like the piston broke across the gudgeon. Old fuel? I heard a story years ago about a boat with a 454 in it in Singapore... New engine, still under warranty. Broke the top off a piston, just like yours. Repaired under warranty, 20 hours later, another one goes. They repaired that too... 10 hours later, another one departs this planet! Now the state service rep got called in (closest rep to Singapore was us) goes up there and starts asking questions, as you would! Long story short... The guy had been buying fuel from a barge making the rounds in Singapore... There tested the fuel and found the octane rating was down to 48!!! The fuel had been on the barge for 2 years!!! Needless to say, the warranty was void, and the owner had to cough for all the repairs!

Wow, I found a lot of little pieces of aluminum in my oil pan, I can only imagine how much trouble that wrist pin did as it broke apart.

THe really unfortunate part is other than my small hole, the rest of the motor is in great shape....... What a waste.

what does water damage look like?

Ayuh,..

The combustion chamber,+ piston top would be Prefectly Clean, with absolutely No carbon on them....

Gee that guy got 3 or four tries. I got one...

No, can't say the fuel was old, I had just put 40 Gal in a couple of days earlier, and the rest (total 75 gal tank) was new during the summer. Thought about bad gas, but it was a highway truck stop in Utah, pretty active, very hot, not much humidity

Question, why does "old Gas" nuke the piston? is it the same as if you run it too lean?
